Online Security Guide - Counter Online Surveillance
The Online Security Guide – Counter unwanted internet surveillance and maintain a secure online presence.
Computer surveillance is now all too easy and accessible, automated computer software readily available can monitor peoples habits and activities on computers absolutely anywhere in the world...
...E-mails, bank details, passwords, visited sites, nothing is safe.
Luckily my online security guide is here to help.
Maintain A Secure Online Presence
If you wish to conduct highly sensitive communications online you should create a secure online presence...
...Firstly create a number of readily available alternate personas that give you access to free web mail and other services. This will keep your options open and possible identity exposure to a minimum.
Use a public access point such as a cyber cafe, a public library that doesn't require an ID or a college computer lab that doesn't require an ID.
Make sure that you do not access your personal (secure) internet services from the cyber cafe - use an alternate persona you have created.
Finally, when using a public access point as part for sensitive communications try not to use the same computer often. |
Online Security Guide - Home Pc
To feel at ease using your Pc you need protection from viruses, hackers, spyware, and spam.
To Combat these threats you will need to at least incorporate the following measures:
Free spyware and adware remover, a personal firewall, an ISP (internet service provider) with spam and virus filter, up to date security fixes for your operating system, free anti virus, hacker prevention, worm prevention and firewall software.
You can get any of the software mentioned above, plus more, all free at download.com (an indispensable web site)
The free options do a very nice job, probably sufficient for most security needs, but don't have the depth of security that you may want. |
Personally I use the following to secure my home Pc:
Spyware doctor and adware alert are my online security guide choices for spyware removal. There is a lot of unethical spying going and I recommend these as two of the best there is.
I recommend at least two because there is a lot of spyware out there and its impossible for anyone program to know them all. (for further precautions I use the spyware removers included with Norton Internet Security and System Mechanic)
They will all often find different spyware and adware threats to one and other, so prove very useful.
Norton Internet Security (Includes firewall, intrusion detection, outbreak alert, anti virus, spyware, hacker and worm prevention, plus more - widely regarded as the best on the market)
I found installing Norton Internet Security slowed my PC boot time by about 50% (nothing else suffered mind you).
Personally I feel the trade off for the high online security provided is well worth it. However there is another good piece of software called ZoneAlarm.
ZoneAlarm doesn't effect boot time and provides almost as high security features as Norton Internet Security but can be downloaded free at download.com. I highly recommend it as an alternative
Norton Password Manager (keep all your passwords secure and offers auto fill options, not essential but a useful piece of software)
I also use System Mechanic from iolo which is a really useful PC doctor...
...It has a nice little spyware remover, an internet tracks cleaner, performance optimizing, internet optimizing and many, many more system tools. |
This concludes the online security guide - please return to the counter surveillance main page.
