Keep Any Private Meeting,
Private!

Keep Any Private Meeting , Private!

Conducting a private meeting, either for business or personal purposes, one that you do not wish to be the subject of surveillance is no longer a given.

With today’s technology it is far too easy for your private meetings to be monitored...

Corporate spying is on the increase and your business may already be subject to unwanted surveillance (over 70% of all businesses that have been bugged go under within 24 months)

Do not let that be you...

...Adopt some of the counter surveillance techniques covered here.

Good Practice

When organizing a private meeting it may not be possible to
contact everybody without the possibility of the details being intercepted.

If you are concerned that your private meetings are being watched or recorded it is good practice to arrange an alternate meeting location near to the actual meeting place, then just direct people to the designated location as they arrive.

In affect this will create a dummy location By securing a location like this you can greatly reduce the chance of any unwanted surveillance.

A simple but effective private meeting tactic is for everyone to switch off or, for better results, remove the battery from their mobile phones before traveling to any secure meeting. It’s safer, if possible, to not take a mobile at all.

Do not take the same route back as you took to the location.

It is worth considering that if all the mobile phones of a group of people are in the same place at the same time on the same day, it can be assumed that you have had a meeting.

If you have to meet in the home or building of another person or organization do not make a phone call from their phone to a number that is identified with you, or from a public phone box near to that building.

Location

Keep Any Private Meeting , Private! Keep on top of the game by switching your private meeting location often, it will make you un-predictable and hard to follow

If you must pay for something whilst at a sensitive meeting, use cash.. In this way you will not generate paper trails linking you together in one place.

If you meet in a public place, pick somewhere with a high level of background noise, and with as many obstacles around the point where you meet, to prevent your conversations being overheard.

It is not a good idea to meet in streets, parks, or on public transport - many of these areas are surveyed by CCTV.

But bars, cafes and restaurants tend not have their CCTV systems linked to a central control room, and what CCTV systems are installed are concentrated around the till and therefore they are worth considering as suitable meeting places.

Secure Your Mail

While it is not advisable to discuss sensitive meetings or issues that may leave a paper or electronic trail, you may be forced to send something by post - so knowing the best precautions to take will help you keep things secure.

The following measures will prevent all but the most expert tampering. (some of these measures should be applied to all important mailings)

  • Wear gloves to prevent creating fingerprints when packaging the item.

  • Do not lick the envelope or stamps (you will leave no DNA sample).

  • Post it in a different location to where you normally post your letters (the further the better).

  • Use stamps bought on a different day.

  • Put sticky tape along each edge and the seams of the envelope, and then sign the tape with an indelible marker.

Today files can go easily by email but you can still consider sending CDs and DVDs by post. To ensure that this data is not open to reading by anyone you should encrypt the data.

If you need to send a sensitive fax, use a copy or print shop which has a self-service desk.

You should now be able to ensure any private meeting will be safe - return to the counter surveillance techniques main page here.
