The Gadget Playground gives you its unbiased PS3 review, its specs and how it measures up against the Xbox 360 and the Wii...
The PS3 is the most powerful videogame system ever to grace our existence.
Made possible by state-of-the-art technologies such as Cell, a processor jointly developed by IBM, Sony Group and Toshiba Corporation.
The Cell comprises of seven microprocessors on one chip, allowing it to perform several operations at once.
The graphics processor (RSX) is co-developed by NVIDIA Corporation and SCEI and incorporates the latest technology in graphics cards – taking console graphics to an unprecedented level.
The PS3 looks sweet and is expertly designed:
Plays Blu-ray movies
Plays standard DVDs
All games in hi-def
1080p HDMI support
Bluetooth for wireless accessories
Online play is free
Backwards compatible
However there are few issues we will highlight in this PS3 review:
Expensive (however you definately get you monies worth)
No rumble/vibration with the controllers
No infrared - HDMI cable not included
DVDs not played in hi-def
Backwards compatibility has been removed from the European model
Online experience may fall short of Xbox Live's functionally and user friendly design
Online games may require a subscription fee
The PlayStation 3 Network
The PlayStation 3 has the ability to go online via the PlayStation Network. The PS3 will enable you to play games online, download games and entertainment content, purchase music and games, as well as transfer downloaded games to the PSP.
The PS3's network is completely free to use (the only bonus over Xbox Live), the only charges are for purchases, or certain games may require a monthly fee to play online – this could prove costly. The PS3 also supports chat and web-surfing.
Now all this should add up to the best gaming enjoyment available for the near future, but does it..?
In my opinion the future of gaming is online – and Microsoft have nailed it with Xbox live – easy to use, highly functional, highly accessible, the list goes on.
The thing is, I am slightly concerned with Sony’s attempts at online gaming – the overall functionality is lacking - the menus/options are poor, making friends, managing friends etc is not as fluid as it should be, pre-game lobby/in-game lobby functionality is below par and usually a serious lack of gamers ruined the day.
The PS3 Review - Final Verdict
Sony’s machine is the most powerful console ever released. This sweet piece of kit has great design bursting with neat features; astonishing graphics, fully HD compatible, Blue-ray player, internet surfing and bluetooth wireless compatibility to name but a few.
On the downside this also makes it the most expensive console ever...
But, It's worth taking into account a blu-ray player alone will set you back anything from £600 to £1000. Compare that to the £400+ ($600) PS3 60GB version and the price suddenly seems a bargain.
The only issue I have is if Sony do not manage to nail the online experience, Xbox will undoubtedly take center stage in the console war...
...but if Sony is on form then this could be the best thing to happen to the gaming world.
